"I've been taking Capoeira lessons from Contra-Mestre Coreba for a few weeks and I have loved every lesson.  I have spent a few months looking for something physical to really challenge me and help me stay in shape, and Capoeira has been exactly what I wanted.

For those that have never heard of Capoeira, it is a Brazilian martial art that centers around acrobatic maneuvers, kicks and other particularly cool-looking tricks.  Remember Eddy Gordo from the video game Tekken?  He did this.  It involves moving in rhythm with music, and using momentum to kick and dodge.  In short, it is amazingly fun to do and really, really awesome to watch.

The instructor, Contra-Mestre Coreba, is inviting and patient, and works extremely well with beginners (like me).  He has a couple of decades of experience and it comes across in the respect he shows for Capoeira and the quality of his instruction.  I cannot recommend him or this class enough.

If you're interested, you can just stop by and watch a class.  All it took was one session and I got totally hooked, and I've been thrilled with every second of it.  I hope to be learning at Capoeira Gerais for a long time to come."

"C. M. Marquinho Coreba has a disciplined and regimented approach to teaching Capoeira, but his classes are not overly rigid. He has a gift for teaching Capoeira moves in a variety of contexts, so you know how and when you could use them in a roda. So I came to his group with a solid vocabulary of Capoeira moves, but am finally learning how to string them all into fluent sentences that flow like poetry in my games. Marquinho is also very encouraging of his students in playing the instruments and singing the music, so I've felt very comfortable in stepping up to the next level and learning the music and the culture of Capoeira. All in all, because of Marquinho's holistic teaching style, I've found his group to be the perfect environment to train and grow my Capoeira skills."

"I'm a regular at Boston Ultimate Fitness, where the classes are held, and after my Monday and Wednesday workouts I would sit and watch the Capoeira classes.  I was really intrigued by the movements, and the music, and when I heard he was offering a beginner's course last summer I jumped at the chance to try it out.  Eight months later I'm still here, and loving it.  Some nights the workouts really make me feel old and creaky, and I can only dream of doing some of the flips and movements that others can, but I'm going to keep plugging away.  I wish I had found the sport earlier.  CM Coreba is a great teacher!! He is very patient with beginners."

"I've been taking classes with CM Coreba for about two years. He is actually a fairly well-known figure in the Capoeira world; known for both his game and his music. Although he is good at the famous acrobatic movements of Capoeira, he also is familiar with the 'practical' side of Capoeira and has the scars to show it. (He also got me in a BJJ choke hold last week to demonstrate how not to do a particular takedown :)"

"I became interested in Capoeira at The Fitness Club for Women in Wellesley, MA. Capoeira was put on our schedule as a conditioning class; and after the first class, I was hooked. My mind and body were challenged, and my soul was filled with the enchanting Capoeira music. It was different from any other form of exercise I had done; and I left with a desire to learn more about the history and the culture.

C.M. Marquinho Coreba is a great instructor. He has an unassuming, humble quality but yet easily gains the respect of his students. He has fostered an energy in his classes that is always encouraging and supportive. His instruction and skills are of a high caliber; and his patience and kindness help every person, at every level, reach the goals they set for themselves. It can be intimidating. However, if you let go of your own judgment, and allow yourself to relax into the music and feel Coreba’s energy and the support from the other students, you soon will be entranced in your own game.

Capoeira can be what you want it to be. It can help you stay in shape and have fun, or it can be more. You can choose to embrace all of what Capoeira is and become a part of something bigger."

"When a new class called Capoeira Conditioning appeared on the schedule at the Fitness Club for Women, I wasn’t sure if it was the kind of workout a middle-aged, suburban mom like myself should consider trying. Simply attempting to pronounce the name of the class was enough of a challenge. However, my curiosity got the best of me and I tried it out. It didn’t take long before I realized it was precisely the workout I’d been searching for, but never knew existed. Also, it didn’t take long for me to realize that our instructor, Marquinho Coreba (a.k.a. Marcus), is a gem. In addition to being the consummate professional and hugely talented in his own right, he’s kind, patient, and encouraging--and a wizard at drawing in students of varying abilities, backgrounds and ages. Marcus always has something new, challenging, and interesting to teach. Unlike traditional exercise classes, Capoeira never gets dull or repetitive. In fact, there’s an ethereal quality about it that’s difficult to put into words. And the beat of the Brazilian music provides the perfect soundtrack for Marcus’s inspirational conditioning classes, as well as the paired sparring within group circles known as rodas.

As my passion for Capoeira continues to grow, my search for more ways to learn and enjoy this unique style of movement brought me to Marcus’s Chinatown classes at Boston Ultimate Fitness as well as the conditioning class at his new studio in Marlborough, called the Dance & Fight Cultural Center. At this point in life, my only regret is that I didn’t discover Capoeira sooner. I can’t help but be envious of all the younger students who have more hope of becoming truly proficient as they work through the progression of belts toward becoming a master of this very special brand of physical fitness, cultural art form, and healthy addiction."
