The Etiquette

There aren’t many specific rules in Capoeira, but the customs and traditions are intricate. In general, the system works in a hierarchy using a cord (belt) system that helps establish beginner, intermediate and advanced levels. Each level is expected to have attained a certain amount of skill and knowledge in the art.

Examples of Capoeira etiquette can be observed when Capoeiristas (practitioners of Capoeira) participate in a roda (ho-dah). To begin playing a game, two players kneel at the foot of the lead berimbau, shake hands, and au (cartwheel) into the roda. When their game is over, they shake hands again, and quickly back out of the ring of Capoeiristas making up the roda circle. There are rules of etiquette for entering the roda that relate to the cord color progression. The only way to understand is to observe and ask questions.

The roda builds awareness of both mind and body while the etiquette ensures the safety of all participants. This is the foundation for the fluid and graceful physical dialogue that materializes. The result is a mercurial blend of energy that is Capoeira.
