Class Descriptions
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (often abbreviated as BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport focusing heavily on the use of submission holds through ground grappling in order to defeat opponents. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo in the early 20th century, which itself was developed from Japanese Jujutsu in the 19th century. Using the proper Jiu-Jitsu techniques, a weaker person can learn how to successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage -- most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Training involves sparring, commonly referred to as rolling, as well as drilling. Forró is a dance form from Northeastern Brazil that developed from European styles of folk music, often distinguished by an accordion. In the early 1990s, Forró hit the dance clubs of São Paulo and Rio, and a whole new segment of the population began to swivel and slide on the dance floor. Our students begin by learning the basic four-count steps which are similar to American country line dancing. Eventually, they learn to dance with a partner (but partners are not required for class). Forró means “for all,” so don’t hesitate to find out what it’s all about. Muay Thai is an intense workout with many benefits. This ancient art from Thailand developed before advanced weapons were available for fighting. Muay Thai is the art of using the head, fists, elbows, knees and feet as weapons to hurt enemies. Some people said that Muay Thai is the most powerful of all the martial arts. Although Muay Thai is practiced extensively in Thailand, it is studied all over the world. Men and women at any age can learn and practice Muay Thai for self-defense, recreation, and sports competitions. Samba is a classic Brazilian dance with an Afro beat. It is the oldest dance tradition in Brazil and is recognized around the world as a symbol of the Brazilian Carnival. It incorporates quick footwork with flow and grace and can be done either alone or with a partner. Come learn this joyful, exuberant, and flirtatious style of dance, which is considered to be one of the most popular expressions of Brazilian culture. Taekwondo (also written as tae kwon do) is a Korean martial art and the national sport of South Korea. It is characterized by fast, high and spinning kicks. In Korean, tae means "to strike or break with foot"; kwon means "to strike or break with fist"; and do means "way," "method," or "art." Thus, taekwondo may be loosely translated as "the art of the foot and fist" or "the art of kicking and punching." Taekwondo training includes a system of blocks, kicks, punches, and open-handed strikes, as well as various take-downs or sweeps, throws, and joint locks. Zumba is a dance fitness program created by dancer and choreographer Alberto "Beto" Perez in Columbia during the 1990s. The program combines Latin and international music with dance, resulting in a fun and enjoyable aerobic workout. Music is the key ingredient to Zumba classes. The score, created with specific beats and tempo changes, transitions the workout from specific toning, strengthening or cardio moves to another, and targets every major muscle group in the body. The Zumba program borrows its Latin flavor from the following dance styles: Cumbia, Salsa, Merengue, Mambo, Flamenco, Chachacha, Reggaeton, Samba, Belly dancing, Bhangra, Hip Hop, and Tango. |
